The
dangers of tongue piercing
Source: Daily Mail
Date: 23/05/2003
A study published in the British Dental Journal
today has warned of the
dangers of tongue piercing. The fashion craze, made popular by
high-profile
figures such as Zara Phillips, can damage teeth and gums, as well
as risking
infection with HIV, hepatitis, herpes and oral thrush. In serious
cases,
patients have suffered blood loss and breathing difficulties after
a tongue
piercing. One woman who had her tongue pierced had to undergo
surgery
because her tongue healed over the stud. Tamer Theodossy, a visiting
specialist at the University College London Hospitals NHS Trust,
has linked
14 health complications, including speech impediments and nerve
damage, to
the practice of tongue piercing.
